The Kerala School of Mathematics (KSoM) is an advanced research institute in Mathematics, established in 2007 as a joint venture between the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Government of India, and the Department of Science and Technology, Government of Kerala. KSoM was envisioned as a centre of excellence dedicated to mathematical research and inspired by the historical Kerala School of Astronomy and Mathematics, which flourished between the 14th and 16th centuries.
The primary objective of KSoM is to foster high-quality research in mathematics. Our mission is to cultivate a vibrant academic atmosphere that supports pioneering research, nurtures emerging mathematicians, and makes impactful contributions to the global mathematical community.
Our faculty members are actively engaged in diverse areas of mathematics, continually expanding the boundaries of knowledge and inspiring future scholars. KSoM offers several academic programmes, including the Integrated MSc-PhD programme, a dedicated PhD programme, and Postdoctoral Fellowships — each designed to combine strong theoretical foundations with hands-on research experience.
KSoM hosts a wide array of academic activities such as the Mathematics Colloquium, focused seminar series, international conferences, and intensive research workshops. These initiatives foster a dynamic, collaborative, and intellectually stimulating environment.
Beyond academics, KSoM is deeply invested in outreach. Our programmes — including the Summer Workshop in Mathematics (SWIM), Glimpses into Mathematics, and the School Mathematics Enrichment Day — aim to promote mathematical literacy and enthusiasm among students at various levels across Kerala and India.
From Kozhikode International Airport: The most convenient way to reach Kerala School of Mathematics (KSoM) is by booking a cab via Uber or OLA. Although you can set your destination as “Kerala School of Mathematics”, drivers may not be familiar with the institute. It is advisable to tell them it is located “opposite to CWRDM” (Centre for Water Resources Development and Management), a well-known landmark nearby. If app-based taxis are unavailable, you can hire a pre-paid airport taxi to “CWRDM”. Estimated fare is ₹1000–₹1500 depending on vehicle type and time of day.
From Kozhikode Railway Station: OLA and Uber services operate from the railway station, offering direct cab rides to KSoM. Alternatively, you can use the prepaid auto-rickshaw service available at the station; provide the destination as “CWRDM”. The expected auto fare is ₹250–₹300 during the day.
From Kozhikode City Centre: Though OLA and Uber services are now available within the city, their fleet size is limited and availability may vary. The most reliable and economical option is public transport. Take a city bus to Mundikkal Thazham, the nearest bus stop to KSoM, located about 1.5 km away. Buses to Mundikkal Thazham depart regularly (every 3–5 minutes during the day) from both Palayam Bus Stand and Puthiya Stand. Most buses heading to REC/NIT pass through Mundikkal Thazham. The journey typically takes 30–40 minutes and costs under ₹15.
From Mundikkal Thazham, auto-rickshaws are available to KSoM. The standard fare is around ₹40 during the day and may go up to ₹60–₹80 at night. After 8:00 p.m., the frequency of buses and availability of autos begins to decline.
Notes: Auto-rickshaw drivers in Kozhikode are known for their integrity. However, since return passengers from KSoM are rare, drivers may request 1.5 times the meter fare during the day and up to 2 times at night. This is a common practice and not an attempt to overcharge. While “Kerala School of Mathematics” may not be familiar to all locals, “CWRDM” is a widely recognized reference point.
